You can either let a small room get the best of you or make living in a small room work for you by figuring out how to make a small room feel bigger. Once you get this down pact, you’ll forget just how small your room really is.

I promise!

Look when it comes to a small room, you basically have to work with what you have since knocking down walls and adding an addition to your home, although doable if you own your house, may not be a headache you want to have and if you rent, well this just isn’t an option for you so here are some ways to help you answer the question on how to make a small room feel bigger.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Lighting

This topic right here is always forgotten about when people try to decorate on their own especially when it comes to decorating small rooms.

People typically think that the overhead light fixture in their room is enough lighting and that is not the case.

Think about it, natural light aka sunlight doesn’t last all day long and if you have minimal windows in your room or if your room just doesn’t get a lot of natural light, then you’re basically assed out. Think about how much smaller this makes an already small room feel. Claustrophobic right?

So how do we fix that?

Most small rooms need at least 3 types of lighting (general, task and mood). I go more into detail about lighting in this blog post so make sure you check it out. What I want you to do right now is to take a look around your room and see where you can add more lighting to help your small room feel bigger.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Mix Up Your Furniture

One common decorating mistake is buying an entire set of furniture that results in a matchy matchy look whether it’s a living room set, dining set, bedroom set, etc and that is a no no especially in a small room.

You just don’t have the space for it. Let’s use a living room as an example, instead of purchasing a sofa, loveseat, chair, coffee table, side tables, etc go with just a loveseat, 1 chair, a coffee table, sofa table, and an ottoman.

You’ve just used up less space in your room with items that will actually allow you to use the space as a living room without all the heaviness of a full on living room set.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Move Your Furniture Closer Together

This one should be a given, but not always. For some reason spreading furniture out close to the walls is a thing and with a small room, it’s a cause for disaster.

Instead, move your furniture pieces closer together and create zones to help divide up the room. This way your room won’t feel crammed.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Choose Your Furniture Wisely

To piggy back off of the earlier tip of mixing up your furniture, being selective about the furniture pieces you bring into your small room is crucial to making it feel bigger.

Go for a loveseat instead of sofa. You’d be surprised how many loveseats out there can actually seat 3 people without taking up all the room as a sofa would in a room. For a bedroom, stay away from canopy beds and instead go with a bed with only a headboard, which doesn’t take up so much room in a small space.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Tuck Things In

Stools and ottomans are your friends if not your best friends when it comes to living comfortably in a small room. Not only do they work, but they can easily be tucked under a coffee table, dinner table or a kitchen island just to name a few.

Another must have item for a small room are nesting tables because they can also be tucked in to save space.

How To Make A Small Room Feel Bigger: Open bookcases

Lack of storage is a huge issue in a small room and that’s why bookcases are a must for them. I love using open bookcases in a small room since they don’t make the space feel heavy like a bookcase with a backing would. Here are some of my current favorite bookcases for small spaces.

You can minimize the clutter by using baskets on the bottom shelves to store all the things that aren’t cute and will throw off your bookcase styling situation.
