Boho Mirror DIY You Can Actually Do
Our hallway mirror almost didn’t survive our hallway makeover, but the almost mishap turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it allowed me to pivot and come up with a plan B to save it from the trash. I came up with this boho mirror DIY project and I’m in love with how my mirror turned out!
A quick little backstory to how we got here.
When I took the mirror off of the wall to start painting the hallway, the frame fell apart (we had this mirror for about 10 years so I guess its time was up or maybe not).
I will say that this project was not at all planned, but it worked so I wanted to share the process with you in case you wanted to try it at home. It’s amazing the creativity that flows from me when I’m balanced.
Boho Mirror DIY Step 1: Supplies
What you’ll need for this Boho Mirror DIY are the following:
Twine about 8 rolls (3 three pack rolls - $1 for each pack)
glue gun and glue sticks (2 pack of glue sticks - $1 each)
cardboard box large enough to use as a frame ( 2 large boxes - $1 each)
marker/pencil ($1 or less)
measuring tape ($1)
Estimated cost: $9
I already had all supplies on hand so this project didn’t cost me anything well let me say real quick that I did have to make a run to Dollar Tree for more twine since I ran out in the middle of the project (you can check out my IG stories here for a little behind the scenes) so I spent a total of about $3 on this project.
Boho Mirror DIY Step 2: Measure
Now I will say that although I’m an Interior Decorator, I hate math so I was surprised with myself on how easy it was for me to create a frame for this mirror.
First, measure your mirror including the specific area of the mirror where the frame will go. Keep in mind that you’re basically creating a brand new frame from scratch so you’ll need the following measurements, length, width and depth of the frame.
Boho Mirror DIY Step 3: Trace and Cut
Now that you have your measurements, use them to trace out the frame on the cardboard box. I found it easier to trace and cut out each side of the frame individually since my mirror was long. This made handling so much easier when it came time to wrapping the twine around the cardboard frame.
I wanted to share some tips that made this project run smooth and fast like:
cut the corners at an angle so the individual frames line up nicely once put together
use the corner piece that was cut off as a template to trace over the other three corners of the frame for even cuts ( eliminates the need to measure again)
Boho Mirror DIY Step 4: Wrap The Twine
Now that you have all four sides of your cardboard frame cut out you can start wrapping the twine on each cut out.
I started at the corner by securing the twine using my hot glue gun on the back side of the frame. Don’t worry about this looking cute since the side with all of the glue gun spots won’t be seen by anyone (more on that later). Once the corner section is secured with the twine, simply start wrapping the remaining part of the cardboard frame with twine securing with your glue gun every few inches.
I will say the reason I went with cardboard is that it matches the color of the twine and makes it easy to disguise any gaps that may happen when the twine loosens up a bit in between the glued sections.
I suggest doing like I did and putting on your fave Pandora or Spotify station and just zoning out with this boho mirror diy project. I will take you a couple of hours or longer if you’re easily distracted like I am! lol
Boho Mirror DIY Step 5: Mount
Now it’s time to hang your mirror.
You’re probably thinking wait, but when are we actually framing the mirror? I chose to hang the mirror first since remember we’re using cardboard for this boho mirror diy project and it’s not the sturdiest material so to avoid any trip ups, it’s best to hang the mirror first then glue the frame onto the mirror.
So go ahead and mount your mirror.
Boho Mirror DIY Step 6: Frame It
Now that your mirror is mounted, go ahead and attach each cut out to your mirror using your hot glue gun.
You’ll have to work fast so that the glue doesn’t dry quickly - at least that’s what I had to do since I was working with a 5 foot long mirror.
Boho Mirror DIY Step 7: Done!
Oh and before I forget, I found an identical mirror at Burke Decor and it was was more that 300 times the price of what it cost me to create my boho mirror DIY project.
