Last week we answered some necessary questions so that your end result is a successful decorating project. If you missed part 2: getting real with yourself, check it out here.

Today we’ll be covering the final part of the planning stage (we made it through). Let’s get to it then.

How To Start Decorating a Room: Mind Your Numbers

Numbers are huge when it comes to decorating a room the right way and there are two sets of numbers that you should NEVER skip over no matter how excited you are about getting to the shopping portion of your decorating project.

I’m here to save you time and money so let’s begin.

Measurements

You need to know what you’re working with like the length, width and height of your walls (including the height of your ceiling). This is even more crucial when you’re working with a small space since you'll want to take advantage of every singe inch of your room so that you can maximize it to it’s fullest potential.

There are other parts of your room that you’ll need to measure as well. I break down how to measure your room in this post over here in case you’re not sure how it’s done properly or if you’re curious about all the parts of your room that need to be covered.

Budget

The second set of numbers that you have to consider is outlining a budget.

There is a way to maximize your budget while still creating a room that you love such as a sanctuary.

I always tell clients to invest in the most important items for the room like the bed for a bedroom, seating for a living room, dining room, and office since these are the items that will get the most use in the space. You want to feel good in your space and that is hard to do when you’re uncomfortable AF. When you side with cost over comfort and investing in your environment, you pay for it in the long run - literally and figuratively.

I beg you not to do it yourself because you are worth the investment of a beautiful space filled with quality items. I always preach how environment is everything and how #homedecorisselfcare because I’ve lived it. I go deep about it in this post here and here.

I want to smack some reality into you by letting you know that a room makeover is going to cost you money. It just is.

Now that you’ve been schooled, finalize a budget and know that you may go over it so be flexible. Decorating is an investment. Please don’t do yourself the disservice of cheating yourself out of a well deserved space that is of quality.
