How I'm Transforming My Living Room To Match My Vibe Part 2
Initially I really wanted to share this when it was complete, but the way my life has been set up lately, I figured I’d share a work in progress post instead. It’s funny how things work out because if we’re keeping it real, redecorating takes time in real life because this ain’t an HGTV episode.
So in part 1 of my living room makeover project, I wasn’t sure if I was going to repurpose a piece in the house that could work as a media cabinet or just purchase a new one. Well, I decided to go ahead and go the repurpose route.
Check out part 1 here to catch up.
Back to the post, I’ve been feeling the urge to work with my hands because I’ve had a lot going on and working with my hands allows me to sort things out in my head and receive precious downloads.
I’ll go deeper into why I decided to go with this design because your girl really was intentional about the way I want this living room makeover to turn out. I don’t just preach about decorating from the soul, I live it too.
This was originally an Ikea piece that I bought years ago and was using in the dining room as a buffet cabinet and decided to bring it into the living room because I knew that it would work in here. The only thing was the look. It was a hard no in its original state, but I saw the potential it had. Here’s a raw before pic.
So I went into research mode because what I didn’t want for this cabinet was for it to look like everything I was finding on youtube. So I sat with myself and went back to vision for this space and it was a no brainer that I had to create a burl wood piece. I love burl wood because no two pieces are alike and it’s a beautiful combination between sophistication and down to earth just like me. Our spaces should be a reflection of us and burl wood is just that for me.
I’ve spoken in depth how feeling grounded in my space is a must and this piece does exactly that for me…allows me to feel grounded AF. Burl wood is a unique and expensive type of wood because it comes from the imperfect parts of a tree and no two pieces are alike, making it popular, therefore expensive.
Originally, to bring my vision to life, I was going to go with contact paper, but I knew that my anal ass would not be satisfied with the quality of wrapping this piece with contact paper - it would erk the crap at me. So I continued to do research and found this video and the stars aligned because it involved one of my fave things to do…paint.
I truly didn’t know if this would work since I’ve never tried anything like this before, but I was willing to try and it worked! I’m so damn proud of myself!!! Like your girl did that shit!!!!! When I tell you I danced and celebrated, I danced and celebrated. Check out the IG highlight I created here for some BTS. I still have to add doors, which I should be installed in about 2 weeks (definitely before the kids go back to school). I’m not sure if I’ll be adding door handles yet, I want to live with it for a bit to see how it feels before I make a decision. Originally, I thought about adding feet to it, but ever since I’ve styled it, I’m really feeling the height as is now, so it’s a no for feet. Oh and one more thing, I’ll be transforming the tall blue vase into something cuter and if you’re wondering where Taz’s blue chair is…it expired as planned.
I’ll share all the details like materials used, budget and etc, once the piece has been finished, but for now, this is the work in progress look.
Stay tuned for part 3 of the living room makeover.
