Work With What You Have: 10 Ways To Upgrade Your Furniture & Give It New Life

You've probably accumulated tons of furniture throughout the years and some of it may still be in good shape, but the rest, especially your grandma's hand me downs (unless they're cute and vintage), can get tossed straight to the curb unless you work with what you have and upgrade your furniture.

When you think about it, you're actually at a great starting point for you and your room since all that your furniture needs is a few tweaks to take it from a hot mess to making you want to show your furniture off to all your friends. While you're at it, you're going to save yourself some serious dough since furniture don't come cheap (at least the good quality, not the furniture from Ikea).I say work with what you have before you go out and spend all this money on new furniture.

There are tons of ways that you can upgrade your furniture and make it look completely different. So different that you may not recognize it after you're done (I'll accept my thank yous now btw)

Check out these ways you can upgrade your furniture and make you do a double take:

Upgrade Your Furniture: #1 Color Swap

One of the ways you can really transform your furniture and make a big impact is with paint.  It's easy and affordable and a pretty quick update (this shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours for one piece of furniture).  So if you've got some time on your hands, go for it and watch and see what a difference paint can make to your furniture.

Grab your sand paper (or sander, if you want to get this over with asap) and paint and start working on your furniture.

Bonus tip: go for a paint with primer and that is made for painting the material your working with whether it's wood, metal, etc.

Upgrade Your Furniture: #2 Just legs

Want to make a big impact in your room, but don't have the time or patience to paint your furniture?  Just tape off the bottom of the legs of your furniture (using painter's tape), like lets say, your nightstand or side table and just paint that area for a quick update. You can get all creative with your choice of color too or go the chic route with a black or metallic color. It'll make a B-I-G difference.  Trust me.

Upgrade Your Furniture: #10 Toss The Pillows

A couch is probably one of the priciest furniture pieces that you'll spend the most money on (a close second to a bed) so if yours is still in good shape, give it a new look with some nice throw pillows.  Easy and inexpensive.  One of my fave places to get pillows from is World Market.

Check them out here.

They'll take the focus off of your sofa and make the pillows the center of attention.
