How To Start Decorating a Room: Do This First
It’s finally happened. The day has arrived when you can no longer tolerate your room. You’re ready to finally do something about it! (me applauding and jumping up and down in the background cheering you on while probably dropping it low too lol)
Now because I don’t want you to fail and I know how excited you are about learning everything there is to know about how to start decorating a room, I’m going to help you out with the first step.
How To Start Decorating a Room: Do This First
Plan.
Yes, I said plan. You heard me right. PLAN.
I’m going to go a step further and expand just a little bit for you because I know that you probably thought you were going to get all the tips on how to shop and save money, but nope, I’m hitting you with this tip right here first because it’s that important and cannot be skipped.
In this blog post, I break down the 4 things that you should NEVER do when decorating your space.
Back to planning, one of the steps in planning is to figure out the purpose of your room aka how you will be using your room aka function.
You don’t know how many times it’s happened when I’m working with a client and this question comes up during the consultation and I hear crickets. That’s because it’s so easy to rush into decorating your space because that’s the fun part. It’s the part you see on Pinterest (the finished look).
So it doesn’t come as a surprise to me that the planning stages of decorating get skipped and get skipped often. I’ve actually talked about how Pinterest and HGTV have really given people false decorating confidence because of how the end result gets highlighted, but not the process of how someone got there.
Planning a decorating project is actually where all the magic happens because without planning, you are setting up yourself to fail in your decorating journey.
Could you imagine if I presented a design to a client without going through the planning stages first? Let’s just say that it wouldn’t be a good look. Not cute.
The good thing is that you’re here and I’m going to help you start things off right.
So think about how you want to use your room.
What activities will you be performing in your room?
Will you be using your room in more than one way? Will it be a multipurpose room? (hint: if you live in a small space, this will be a yes for you)
Once you figure out the purpose of your space, every other step in the design process becomes so much easier.
Let me give you a bonus tip and advise you to grab a notebook, create a new notebook in Evernote or a Google doc for these planning stages so that you stay organized and have everything in one place. This will help to ease the overwhelm.
Now that you’ve gotten the first thing off your list on how to start decorating, you’re going to want to stay tuned to next week, where I share with you the next step in the planning stages of decorating.
If you know off the bat that you’re not the planning type and just want this decorating project done for you, then hit me up here for some help.
