Fix High Water Curtains: Learn How to Choose the Right Curtain Length for Your Space
I’m on a mission to end this decorating mistake that I see way to often…high water curtains and it’s a phenomenon at this point 🤣
If this is you, there’s no shame bc now that you’re about to know better, you’re going to do better so read closely.
Most ceiling heights tend to be 8 feet tall (96 inches) and yes I know that most curtains come in 84 inches aka 7 feet which leaves us with a widespread phenomenon of high water curtains.
Now I’m hearing that high water pants have made a come back, but I’m here to tell you that this will NEVER be the case for curtains…EVER, EVER.
All that you basically have to do to choose the right curtain length for your space is make sure that your curtain length equals your ceiling height and you’ll be good to go.
This will allow for your room to feel taller and if you live in a small space, this is a GREAT thing.
Now if this tip comes too late for you bc you are part of this phenomenon, keep reading because I’m going to share different ways that you can make your already too short curtains longer or the right length.
How to Fix High Water Curtains: Add Curtain Clip Rings
These come in different sizes so to determine which one will work for you just figure out the thickness of your curtain rod ( I wouldn’t go more than one inch bigger than your rod).
Anything bigger will look off.
This trick right here will give your curtains an extra 1 - 2 inches in length depending on the size of the clip ring. I really like these from Amazon.
How to Fix High Water Curtains: Adjust Your Curtain Rod
Sometimes I see people hang their curtain rod close to the ceiling, which is halfway correct.
The only thing is they forget that in order for this look to work, your curtains have to touch or even drag on the floor a bit. In this scenario, just lower your curtain rod closer to your window frame for an adjusted look.
How to Fix High Water Curtains: Add Fabric
Sometimes neither of these tricks will work and that’s when you have to buy some fabric to add the needed length to your curtains.
All you need is fabric tape.
Now if you’ve got zero sewing skills, you’re going to love fabric tape since all you need to do is heat up the tape to join the curtain and fabric with a hot iron (that’s it - no special iron needed - I promise. If it heats up, it will work)
How to Fix High Water Curtains: Undo The Hem
This trick can give you about a 1/2 inch to 1 inch or more in length to your existing curtain and combined with the other tips I gave you, your curtains may just finally touch the floor.
How to Fix High Water Curtains: Buy New Curtains
This is my fav tip because I’ve learned the hard way that time is money.
This is coming from someone who loves a good DIY project (they help me to relax and I get a lot of downloads when I’m working with my hands). The downside is that they take up time so if you’re short on time and skill, then just buying curtains that are the right length for Your space will be your best bet.
Here are a few of my fav spots that carry 96 inch,108 inch and if you’re lucky, even longer curtains:
If you happen to live in a loft or you are blessed with ceilings taller than 9 feet in your home, you will have to go the custom route since most retailers do not carry curtains longer than 108 - 120 inches.
